The Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre was inaugurated on 30 January 1991 in Windhoek. This bi-national establishment is governed by a Namibian association which is subsidised by the French Government.
Its main aim is to give shape to the project of co-operation between France and Namibia in the cultural and artistic fields. Since 1991, the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre has developed a lot of activities and initiatives which have had a real impact and earned it the acknowledgement by the local authorities.
The bi-national status guideline of the actions of co-operation, is an essential element which is the core of the new building. The stonebreaking ceremony took place on 25 June 1998 in presence of the Namibian President Sam Nujoma and the French President Jacques Chirac. The Namibian State has donated the site and the French State pays for the building. The building has a surface of 1590 sqm on a parcel of 2500 sqm. : it is made up of a new construction and the restoring of a listed house that was already on the site. The new building includes six class rooms, an art studio, a photography laboratory, a big exhibition room, a conference room, a cinema, a resource centre, a large library, a videotheque and a motion picture room. The listed house will be converted into a "Café of cultures".
Thanks to these new premises, the Centre will be able to contribute effectively to the development of the Namibian cultural identity and spread knowledge, in particular about France, the Francophone world and the development at a cultural and artistic level as well as in the economic and technologies fields.
